The construction of the Wolf Creek Pump Station in Kansas City, Kansas in 2004 was an effect of the successful development of recreation, retail and single-family growth that has spanned the area of Western Wyandotte County throughout the past decade. From the development of the Village West retail and entertainment destination that includes Kansas City T-Bones baseball, Cabela’s and the Great Wolf Lodge indoor waterpark resort, to the Kansas Speedway which brought NASCAR and Indy Racing League events to the area in 2001, Kansas City, Kansas has become its own destination for area families and travelers throughout the country.
“This was the first of two pump stations planned for the area,” said Tnemec coating consultant Scott Keilbey. “We recommended Tnemec’s Perma-Shield System for the job, and it was the first time Burns and McDonnell had specified this coating system.”
Following surface preparation in accordance with SSPC-SP13/NACE No. 6 Surface Preperation of Concrete, Series 218 MortarClad, a cementitious epoxy resurfacer, was trowel-applied to the wet well surface areas. Series 434 Perma-Shield H2S, a 100% solids hybrid epoxy mortar, was then spray-transferred and trowel-applied at 1/8-inch thickness. Series 435 Perma-Glaze, a 100% solids epoxy lining, was used as a topcoat to provide additional protection.
The interior block was coated with Series 54-660 Masonry Filler, a filler for use with high-performance topcoats subject to wet conditions, corrosive fumes and chemical contact. Series 28 Tufcryl, a water-based acrylic polymer providing excellent long-term industrial exposure protection, was then roller-applied to the concrete surface.
The interior piping was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning, then received two coats of Series N69 Hi-Build Epoxoline II, a polyamidoamine epoxy designed for protection and finishing of steel and concrete.
