When the original coating on the floor of an airport hangar used for plane maintenance by the state of Tennessee showed signs of wear and tear, a high-performance coating system including an extremely hard, chemical-resistant urethane finish coat from Tnemec was chosen to make the floor like-new again. “They wanted something durable, that was their main concern,” Tnemec coating consultant Tiffany Goulet said. “They also wanted something that would hold up to jet fuels, grease and oils while being easy to clean.” Planes owned by the state of Tennessee are moved in and out of the hangar for maintenance creating constant heavy traffic.
The 18,000 square foot concrete floor was mechanically abraded to completely remove an existing coating while creating a surface profile for the new coating system. “We decided that completely removing the old coating was the best option because of its rough condition,” Goulet said. A high-solids base coat of Series 201 Epoxoprime, a modified polyamine epoxy, was then applied directly to the concrete floor. The base coat was followed by Series 281 Tneme-Glaze, also a modified polyamine epoxy.
After Series 281 cured, it was sanded and top-coated with Series 248 EverThane, an aliphatic moisture cured urethane, known for its extremely hard, chemical- and wear-resistant properties. “I had originally recommended another product, but then Tnemec launched Series 248 and the architect wanted to use it for its durability,” Goulet said. The product improves wear resistance and provides a satin finish to help hide heavy traffic areas, which, in addition to it’s resistance to jet fuel and oils proved to be the best finish coat for the hangar.
A year after the completion of the project, the coating was still performing to the owner’s expectations. “It looked really good overall and the owner is pleased,” Goulet noted.
