Smuttynose Brewery Floors

After 20 years in Portsmouth, Smuttynose Brewing decided to expand and build a new facility in Hampton, New Hampshire. Smuttynose used the opportunity to upgrade their equipment, gift shop, tasting room and install a new state-of-the-art flooring system from Tnemec.

“Beverage facilities like Smuttynose need a durable floor system that can stand up to daily washdowns and frequent foot traffic,” said Michael Woesnner, local Tnemec representative with Righter Group, Inc. “We worked with the owners and the contractor to determine the best system for their requirements.”

Floors were prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP13/NACE No. 6 Surface Preparation of Concrete. In areas where moisture vapor transmission (MVT) was a concern, applicators applied Series 241 Ultra-Tread MVT, a polyurethane modified concrete formulated to withstand problems associated with elevated relative humidity and alkalinity in concrete. Series 241 was applied by squeegee or trowel at 1/8” thickness and broadcast to refusal with sand for skid resistance. In areas where additional thermal shock resistance was required, the team applied Series 245 Ultra-Tread S.

All floors then received a finish coat of Series 281 Tneme-Glaze, a glaze-like coating that imparts a smooth, aesthetically pleasing finish while providing protection against abrasion and frequent cleaning. Series 281 was applied at 6.0-12.0 mils dry film thickness (DFT) by squeegee and roller.

“The owners and applicators were very happy with the resulting floors,” added Woessner. “We have since revisited the brewery – two years after opening – and the flooring systems still look good as new.”

Smuttynose’s Towle Farm facility (named after the land where it stands) offers tours five days a week and houses a restaurant and tasting room that are open daily. Smuttynose first started serving its Shoals Pale Ale in 1994 and continues to release a variety of full-time and seasonal beers annually. As of April 2018, Smuttynose Brewing Company is the largest craft brewery in New Hampshire.
