Scottsburg Water Tank

As the county seat of Scott County, Scottsburg, Indiana sits approximately 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. With a population of just more than 6,000 residents, Scottsburg takes pride in preserving the community’s rich history. So when plans were in motion to construct a new water tank in 2005, the design engineer was careful to avoid deflecting from the historic atmosphere of the town.

Saegeseer Engineers detailed a “witch’s hat” design for Scottsburg’s elevated water tank, a design that was popular in small towns in the late 1940s through early 1960s. Having specified Tnemec for past projects, the engineer was aware of the excellent reputation and performance capabilities of Tnemec coating systems within the water storage tank industry.

“We had worked with Saegesser Engineers on four previous water tank repaints,” said Tnemec coating consultant Jerry Petro. “They liked what we put together for this project and certainly trusted our brand.”

Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc, a two-component, moisture-cured zinc-rich primer, was spray-applied to the interior of the tank following surface preparation in accordance with SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 Near-White Blast Cleaning. The interior then received two spray-applied coats of Series 20 Pota-Pox, a polyamide epoxy.

The exterior of the tank was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning, and then received a coat of Series 91-H2O. An intermediate coat of Series 20 was applied next, followed by a topcoat of Series 1075 Endura-Shield II, a high-build quality coating highly resistant to abrasion, corrosive fumes and exterior weathering. A high-gloss urethane clear coat, Series 76 Endura-Clear, completed the exterior coating system, providing additional color and gloss retention for the town’s logo that was captured on the water tank.

“The town has an outstanding logo that is featured nicely on their new water tank,” noted Petro. “Phoenix Fabricators did a wonderful job on the project, and everyone was pleased with the results.”
