Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. is one of the largest independent midstream crude oil companies in North America, owning and operating approximately 21,000 miles of crude oil and refined product pipelines, approximately 62 million barrels of crude oil, refined products and LPG terminalling and storage capacity, and a full complement of truck transportation and injection assets. The company has an extensive network of facilities located in key producing basins and transportation gateways in the United States and Canada.
In April 2007, Delta Coatings, Belle Chasse, LA, was commissioned to repaint all existing pipeline at the facility in Grand Isle. This particular site was nearby a parking lot and overspray was a concern, so the owner wanted a high-performance coating system that could be spray applied, which would also reduce labor costs.
The surface was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3, along with brush blasting and powerwashing with water containing Holdtight. The areas that were cleaned to bare metal were then spot primed with Series 1 Omnithane, a modified aromatic polyurethane primer, while the remaining areas received a coat of Series 66 Hi-Build Epoxoline, a polyamide epoxy. Next, two coats of Series 1028 Enduratone, a High Dispersion Pure acrylic polymer, were spray applied to the entire steel surface. A water-based, low-VOC coating that provides excellent long-term protection, Series 1028 is mildew resistant, exhibits very good gloss and color stability and may be spray, brush or roller applied to achieve dryfall.
