Frances Meadows Aquatic and Community Center

After plans were finalized for the $12 million Frances Meadows Aquatic and Community Center in Gainesville, Georgia, Tnemec coating consultant Tiffany Goulet became immersed in selecting a wellspring of protective coatings for every type of wet and dry substrate imaginable. “We worked closely with the architect to make sure all their needs were met with coatings, including a recommendation for galvanized decking that would be compatible with the shop primer,” Goulet acknowledged. “The owner is very pleased and proud of the facility.”

Specific coating systems (among others) used for the project included:

  • A combination of Series 130 Envirofill, a cemetitious acrylic; Series 84 Ceramlon ENV, a modified aliphatic amine epoxy; and Series 297 Enviro-Glaze, a ceramic-modified polyurethane, for block walls and wet areas.
  • A three-coat system consisting of Series 90-97 Tneme-Zinc, an aromatic zincrich urethane primer, Series 27WB Typoxy, a polyamide epoxy, and Enviro-Glaze topcoat for structural steel in wet areas.
  • Series 115 Uni-Bond DF, a rust-inhibitive acrylic, spray-applied to metal decking and bar joists in dry areas.
  • A two-coat system of Series 37H Chem-Prime H.S., a phenolic alkyd primer, and Series 114 H.B. Tneme-Tufcoat, a high gloss acrylic epoxy, on metal doors and frames in wet and high-traffic areas.
  • Series 222 Deco-Tread, a colored quartz-filled, modified polyamine epoxy, and Series 284 Deco-Clear, a modified polyamine epoxy clear finish, rolled and broadcast on floors in locker rooms, showers and restrooms.

In addition to a pair of three-story tall winding water slides, the center features an outdoor “Splash Zone” with 34,000 square feet of swimming area, a “swirl pool,” “lazy river,” and a play structure with water buckets and spray fountains. Indoor amenities include a 10-lane indoor competition pool with seating for 300 spectators, a four-lane warm water pool with handicapped accessible ramps for water aerobics, hydro therapy and swimming lessons, a wellness center, and a 4,400-square-foot meeting space.
