A new above ground water storage tank and booster station were constructed at the Valley Crest Plant Site in Apple Valley, California. As part of the development and execution of this project, the owner of the project worked with the owners of the local cemetery to minimize the visual impact of the new facilities from the cemetery chapel window and the surrounding area.
As the final phase of the project, the owners wanted to paint a mural on the reservoir and booster station building. This phase of the project was awarded to Crosno Construction, who originally erected and coated the tank. The team at Crosno cleaned and scarified the existing coating, Series 1095 Endura-Shield, and applied a base coat of Series 1072V Fluoronar, a low VOC, low sheen version of Tnemec’s fluoropolymer finish coat.
Working as a subcontractor to Crosno Construction, the rock design was created and painted by long-time mural and water tank artist, Rolf Goetzinger, who used Series 1072V in several colors to finish the water tank. Goetzinger also painted the pump station in a similar motif, utilizing Series 1029 Enduratone, a water-based, low VOC acrylic polymer coating, as the topcoat on the building’s exterior.
The painting of the mural was completed in May 2019. The owners, applicators and surrounding community are pleased with the design and the unique appearance, as it effectively minimizes the visual impact to the cemetery and surrounding area.
In January 2020, the Valley Crest Tank and Pump Station project was awarded the William Johnson SSPC Structure Award, presented to the project team for outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work.
